The Groote Museum is divided into zones. Discover here what there is to see and experience in the zone about the skin.

From an elephant with its thick skin, to a cell with its thin membrane: nature packs everything in. Nothing can live without a casing: it keeps in  what belongs in and it forms a barrier against intruders.

Skin or fur, covering or bark: a natural packaging breathes, allows moisture to pass through and is biodegradable.

Your skin encases you as an individual and sets you apart from everything you are not. It is your protection, and at the same time, your connection to the world around you - your naked truth.

Spiky or cuddly?

What is it like to have a soft or spiky coat? Try on the coats at the museum and experience it for yourself.

Humanæ

Skin comes in many shades. Artist Angelica Dass uses the colors of the Pantone® color fan in her work Humanae. Where are you in the fan?

Waar te vinden

This area is located on the ground floor in the West Hall of the museum.

New coat

A snake's skin does not grow with it. This means that while the snake itself grows, it grows out of its coat. The snake creates a new skin, with larger scales so that this skin fits better. When the new skin is ready, the snake makes a fluid to let go of the old skin in one go. We humans also shed our skin, only this does not happen all at once or very noticeably. Unless you get a sunburn.

Juicy armor

Ripe, juicy fruit is nothing more than an appealing package. From seed, that is spread by gluttonous animals via their feces. Other fruits, such as nuts, intentionally have a hard shell only to be eaten by certain animals. In any case: all-natural packaging is in service to the survival of the species they conserve, breath, protect against diseases, allow moisture in, and repel water- all at the same time. Oh, and they are completely recyclable.
