Sustainability at ARTIS

ARTIS is dedicated to helping create a future in which all life can flourish. Read about the ARTIS commitment to sustainability here.

The ARTIS ambitions

ARTIS aims to play a sustainability leadership role in a number of areas. For example, the zoo hopes to operate without an ecological footprint by 2030, demonstrating that even a place with heritage buildings and millions of visitors can be sustainable, and inspiring others to work towards a greener future.

Sustainable taps at ARTIS

All of the toilets at ARTIS have been equipped with wash and dry taps that eliminate the need for paper towels. As well as reducing waste, this also saves 7,665 kg of CO2 per year.

Brown toilet paper: is it actually clean?

The toilet paper used at ARTIS is made completely from bamboo or recycled paper, so no trees have to be cut down to make it (unlike the 27,000 trees that are cut down daily around the world for regular toilet paper). The colour and thickness of the paper can vary depending on the bamboo supplier, so the paper is sometimes brown. This has nothing to do with hygiene, safety or quality, however. It is simply clean and sustainable.
