All of the refreshments on offer in the catering venues at ARTIS have been vegetarian since 2022.

ARTIS hopes to inspire visitors to make sustainable choices, including with respect to food.

Producing vegetarian food usually consumes much less water and other resources than food containing meat. The goal is to also reduce the use of other animal proteins wherever possible. This includes cheese and milk, since dairy production also has a considerable impact on the environment. For example, our poffertjes are made without eggs and milk, and you can’t taste the difference at all!

Creative, circular and delicious

ARTIS demonstrates that the comfort foods associated with a day out, such as fries, burgers, ice cream or pizza, can also be made much more sustainably. Some of the things on offer at ARTIS are vegetarian gyros and a delicious vegetarian hot dog. They are just as tasty as the original, but much better for the environment.Similarly, the orange peels left over after making smoothies and fresh juices go to a company that turns them into soap. Another company uses the coffee grounds to grow oyster mushrooms that are used in turn to make oyster mushroom croquettes. These are some great examples of how effectively waste streams can be put to use.
