Caring for nature together with ARTIS

By working together, we can ensure our earth remains healthy. ARTIS participates in species and nature conservation programmes, and is also committed to research, education and urban wildlife.

ARTIS loves all things great and small, from the tiniest microbes and insects to the largest predators, such as the jaguar.

For this reason, ARTIS pays extra attention to protecting and conserving nature. Read on to find out all of the ways that ARTIS commits to nature conservation.

What is nature conservation?

Nature all around the world is struggling, mainly as a result of human activity. For this reason, ARTIS believes in conservation by means of caring for and restoring nature, both far afield and right here in our own back yard. Every single ARTIS employee contributes to this goal in some way, whether they are a zookeeper or a gardener, a biologist or a researcher.

Species conservation at ARTIS

ARTIS currently participates in 86 species conservation programmes. These programmes involve collaborations between zoos aimed at maintaining healthy populations of vulnerable or endangered species outside of their natural habitats. The main goal is to protect species that are threatened with extinction in the wild.

ARTIS also supports global projects for the protection of endangered species and their habitats.

Research

Since its foundation, ARTIS has opened the zoo up for scientific research, gathering valuable knowledge about animal welfare, evolution and biodiversity. Every day, this helps us become a little better and more successful at our work. ARTIS is proud to join forces with universities, colleges and other knowledge institutions, both national and international, to contribute to a sustainable future.

Education

In order to educate people about their role in and dependence on nature, ARTIS provides a diverse educational programme for young and old. The reasoning behind this is that if you learn about nature, you will naturally start caring for it too. ARTIS also supports conservation organisations that actively involve local communities in their projects.

Urban wildlife

Cities are often more biodiverse than the countryside around them. This is because cities contain a wide variety of habitats, ranging from ‘rocky cliffs’ in the form of apartment buildings, to wetland shores in parks. ARTIS is a haven for nature at the heart of the city, and is home to many native species.
