Cutting tap water use by half

ARTIS uses a great deal of water for the ponds, water features in the animal enclosures, and the plants and animals themselves.

Because it rains often in the Netherlands, there is no shortage of rainwater and ARTIS makes good use of this.

There are water storage tanks in a number of parts of the garden, where captured rainwater is stored underground. This is particularly beneficial for plants and trees in the zoo, since unlike tap water, rainwater does not contain calcium.

Canal water

The water in the Savannah and the elephant enclosure comes from the canal that runs alongside the zoo. In the ARTIS-Groote Museum, the toilets are flushed with rainwater. ARTIS plans to use canal water or rainwater for all of its toilets in the future.

Sustainable taps

Sustainable taps are installed in all of the toilets at ARTIS, using less water and eliminating the need for disposable hand towels. The built-in hand dryer is much more sustainable than previous hand dryer models.
