The ARTIS Aquarium restoration
For decades, the ARTIS Aquarium has showcased one of the most enchanting elements of nature: the underwater world. Now nature is slowly taking over the building.
Because ARTIS is committed to preserving the Aquarium for future generations, the design includes the complete restoration and preservation of the building.
The restoration plans
Early in 2021, ARTIS Aquarium closed its doors to undergo a large-scale restoration. Some of the fish and corals were moved to other aquariums in Europe, while the rest are currently located in other parts of ARTIS Zoo.
The restoration of the ARTIS Aquarium is intended to revive its original splendour and prepare the building for the future. While modern techniques are being used to preserve the building, attention is also being paid to preserving the historic elements. One of the most delicate tasks is the restoration of the 140-year-old Lloyd water filtration system in the building's historic catacombs.
A chance to innovate
While the restoration of the Aquarium is sorely needed, it also presents an opportunity to innovate. The environment, climate, and sustainability are key contemporary issues, and accordingly, ARTIS is taking responsible steps. Not only will the building become more sustainable as a result of the restoration, it will also feature new elevators and ramps, and provide more space to explore. This renovation is preparing the Aquarium for a future in which sustainability and accessibility are central concerns. The renovated Aquarium will soon tell a significant story about our relationship with water and the importance of clean water.
Schedule
Construction and restoration work is expected to be completed in 2025. The re-opening is scheduled for spring 2026.
