The Groote Museum is divided into zones. Discover here what there is to see and experience in the zone about ears and sound.

The world has three kinds of sound. Geophony is the noise of the earth: rushing rivers, rumbling volcanoes, breaking ice floes.

Biophony, by which we mean the sounds of plants and animals: rustling, crackling, scratching, tapping, pecking, and messages such as “I live here: get out”, “watch out, danger!”, and “hello, baby”.

And finally, there’s anthropophony: every sound man produces, ranging from babbling babies to stalling airplanes and the neighbor’s drill. But where do you hear silence?

Howling without tears

An iconic nature sound: the howl of a wolf. Although this type of howling does not involve tears. Wolves howl to warn each other, to track each other. Or as communication during the hunt since the sound can be heard from miles away. Each wolf has its own unique sound, just like we humans have our own unique voice. They can change different pitches and vocalizations by using their vocal cords. This particular wolf lived in ARTIS and was also known as “Milou”.
