Arthrospira platensis also known as Spirulina
The common name of this organism reveals something about it: the cyanobacterium Arthrospira platensis is known as Spirulina due to its spiral shape, somewhat like the spring inside a pen. The spiral shape makes this fascinating bacterium sturdy enough to grow to a great length.
Spirulina or Arthrospira platensis?
Spirulina and Arthrospira platensis are often confused with each other. Technically, they are different names for what is now considered the same cyanobacterium. Scientists discovered that the organisms referred to as ‘Spirulina’ actually belong to the genus Arthrospira, in which A. platensis is one of the major species. The name Spirulina has remained popular in the food and health industry, while Arthrospira platensis is the correct scientific name for the microbe.
Photosynthesis
Aside from having an interesting appearance, this microorganism is also capable of making oxygen by means of photosynthesis, just like plants. Photosynthesis is the process by which CO2 and water are converted into sugar and oxygen.
Superfood
Spirulina has been used for centuries as a food source by various cultures, and is known these days for its high nutritional value. Arthrospira platensis is not only full of protein and vitamins, it may also lower cholesterol. This makes it a healthy and sustainable food supplement. Spirulina is also used to provide astronauts with the nutrients they need, so it really is a food of the future!
